Biden Economy

FILE – President Joe Biden speaks at the North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU) Legislative Conference at the Washington Hilton in Washington, April 6, 2022. The U.S. economy faces plenty of threats: War in Ukraine, high grocery bills, spiking gasoline prices, splintered supply chains, the lingering pandemic and rising interest rates that slow growth. The Biden White House is betting the U.S. economy is strong enough to withstand these threats, but there are growing fears of a coming economic slump among voters and some Wall Street analysts.

The Biden White House is betting the U.S. economy is strong enough to withstand these threats, but there are growing fears of a coming economic slump among voters and some Wall Street analysts.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Anthony Rendon sent a long fly ball into the left-field corner in the seventh inning Thursday night, eliciting a full-throated roar from a sellout crowd of 44,723 in Angel Stadium, and when the right-field scoreboard flashed “HOME RUN,” it appeared the Angels had turned a o…

Klay Thompson scored 33 points with six 3-pointers and the Golden State Warriors won their third straight game after dropping four in a row, running away late from the depleted Los Angeles Lakers for a 128-112 victory. Jordan Poole added 19 points and a career-high 11 assists for the Warriors on a festive night at Chase Center, where huge Golden State fan and K-pop star BamBam brought the house down with a spirited halftime performance in the Warriors’ final regular-season home game.

Bo Horvat and Alex Chiasson each had two goals and an assist and the Vancouver Canucks continued a late playoff push with a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. Elias Pettersson had a goal and two assists for the Canucks, who have won two straight and earned five points in their last three games. Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves and is 11-3-2 in 16 career games against Arizona. Nick Schmaltz scored his career-high 22nd goal for the Coyotes, who have lost nine of 11. Harri Sateri made 27 saves in his first game with Arizona and his 10th in the NHL.

Connor McDavid set a career high with his 42nd goal and became the seventh player in NHL history to record multiple point streaks of at least 15 games in a season as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-2. McDavid also had an assist to remain the league’s top scorer with 109 points. Evan Bouchard also had a goal and two assists for the Oilers who have won six straight to take a three-point lead over the Kings for second place in the Pacific Division. Warren Foegele also scored for Edmonton and Mike Smith stopped 30 shots. Trevor Moore and Viktor Arvidsson had goals for Los Angeles which has dropped two straight.

Mark Canha and Starling Marte drove in runs to back five shutout innings from Tylor Megill, and the New York Mets won manager Buck Showalter’s debut by beating the Washington Nationals 5-1. Canha and Marte were two of the Mets’ free-agent additions this offseason. Megill is a 6-foot-7 right-hander who reached the majors last June and filled in as the opening day starter for injured Jacob deGrom. Megill allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. Juan Soto produced Washington’s lone run with his 99th career homer. Patrick Corbin gave up two runs in four-plus innings and took the loss.

Framber Valdez outpitched Shohei Ohtani with 6 2/3 dominant innings of two-hit ball, and the Houston Astros tied the longest opening day winning streak in major league history with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Alex Bregman had an early RBI single and a late homer as the Astros won their 10th straight season opener. That ties the mark posted in the late 19th century by the Boston Beaneaters. Ohtani struck out nine while pitching one-run ball into the fifth inning for the Angels, who lost their season opener for the eighth time in nine years. Last season’s AL MVP went 0 for 4 at the plate.

Isner hits Houston-record 38 aces to reach quarters on clay

John Isner has erased a match point and hit a tournament-record 38 aces during a 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4), 6-3 comeback victory over Steve Johnson at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. Isner won the title in 2013. He one of five Americans in the quarterfinals, tying the most at the event since it moved to Houston in 2001. He’s joined in that round by Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka and Michael Mmoh. Fritz is the highest-ranked American man at No. 13 and seeded No. 2 in Houston. He advanced Thursday by beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-1, 6-4.

Seth Beer launched a game-winning, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Beer’s blast to deep right field off Craig Stammen spoiled a stellar outing by San Diego starter Yu Darvish, who fired six no-hit innings before being pulled with a 2-0 lead after throwing 92 pitches. The Padres lost because of a ninth-inning bullpen meltdown. Robert Suarez and Craig Stammen were unable to get an out in the ninth.

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The San Diego Padres played a delayed opening-day game on a pleasant evening inside the massive airplane hangar known as Chase Field, and Yu Darvish got them started by chasing history.

Trevor Lewis also scored for Calgary, which won its third straight game. Dan Vladar made 31 saves to earn his 10th win. Nick Bonino and Logan Couture scored for San Jose, which lost its fifth in a row. James Reimer made 32 saves before leaving with an injury in the third period following a collision with Couture in the crease. He was able to skate off under his own power. Kaapo Kahkonen stopped all five shots he faced in relief.

MARSEILLE, France–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Apr 8, 2022–

SAN FRANCISCO — Four veterans sat. Another got waived. The Los Angeles Lakers season, functionally over after being eliminated, still had to take the court — even if 80% of its once-projected starting lineup wasn’t available.

Authorities won’t bring criminal charges against officers who pinned an Oakland man to the ground during an arrest a year ago that ended in his death. The Alameda County district attorney’s office released a custody death report that found the officers acted reasonably in stopping and restraining 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez in April 2021. A coroner’s report said Gonzalez died from the toxic effects of methamphetamine use but the stress of being restrained was a contributing factor. His mother and son have filed federal civil rights lawsuits that contend the officers asphyxiated him.

Nissan is working with NASA on a new type of battery for electric vehicles that promises to charge quicker and be lighter yet safe. The Japanese automaker said Friday the all-solid-state battery will replace lithium-ion batteries now in use for a 2028 product launch and a pilot plant launch in 2024. The company says the all-solid-state battery is stable enough to be used in pacemakers. When finished, it will be about half the size of the current battery and fully charge in 15 minutes, instead of a few hours. Nissan and NASA are using a computerized database to try hundreds of thousands of materials.

North demolishing hotel that was symbol of Korean engagement

North Korea is demolishing a South Korean-owned hotel at a North Korean resort that was one of the last symbols of inter-Korean engagement. Seoul officials called for the North to stop the “unilateral” destruction. The floating Haegumgang Hotel was a major property among dozens of facilities South Korea built to accommodate tours to Diamond Mountain during a high period of engagement in the 1990s. But North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2019 called the facilities “shabby” and ordered them destroyed amid frustration over tighter U.S. sanctions that prevent the tours from resuming. North Korea postponed the demolition because of COVID-19 but appears to have begun it in recent weeks.

The Denver Nuggets clinched a playoff berth Thursday night with a 122-109 rout of the Memphis Grizzlies and Nikola Jokic made NBA history. He led Denver with 35 points and 16 rebounds and became the first player in NBA history with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a single season. The Nuggets clinched a top-six seed and still have a chance to win the Northwest Division. The Grizzlies have already won their first division title and own the second seed in the West.  They’re hoping to get star guard Ja Morant back from a knee injury this weekend.
